The Case for Phonics-Only Reading Instruction

Foundational skills are essential for all students to succeed as readers, and it’s time to have an important conversation…

There’s no such thing as phonics-only reading instruction, y’all!

Phonics-only reading instruction is a myth, a straw man, and nothing we see in real life.

In fact, in each of the curricula with strong foundational skills reviews, students spend more ELA instructional time working with texts and practicing early writing than they do on foundational skills. That’s something I’ve been meaning to write about, because it actually feels like a pretty important detail for educators to know.

Happy April Fools Day!
